This hole can be very useful to you in certain situations – and professional craftsmen use it a lot.
The first idea one might have is to use the hole in the screwdriver handle simply to hang the tool somewhere. Some even pass a rope through it to make it easier. However, the actual function is much more useful.
Sometimes some screws refuse to come out no matter how much force you use to turn the tool. In this case, you can insert a second screwdriver or other elongated tool into the cross hole and use it as leverage. This makes unscrewing stubborn screws much easier – the longer the lever, the easier it becomes, naturally. That is why it is important to check for the presence of such a transverse hole in the handle when purchasing a screwdriver.
There are also products with a slot for a hex key, which serve the same purpose. However, you will then need the appropriate size, which is not necessary with a simple hole.
However, be careful not to put so much force on the screw that it breaks. If it rotates without extending, the material may deform and the head may break. In this case, it might help to spray a little penetrating oil between the screw and the material before turning. Caution is also required if you want to drive a screw into the material and there is only a small piece left to drive. If it breaks, then you will have an even bigger problem. It might be a good idea to remove the screw and drill a small hole before screwing it back in.
