Many new cars are sold with poor crash protection – increasing the risks in the event of an accident

Many new cars are sold with poor crash protection

Facts: Folksam’s compilation

The insurance company Folksam has compiled how many car models in the new car trade do not get five out of five stars in Euro NCAP’s crash tests.

Of 23 car models that do not reach the top rating of 5 stars, there are 13 models with 4 stars, 6 with 3 stars, 1 with 2 stars, 2 with 1 star and 1 with 0 stars.

23 car models that are sold as new in Sweden do not reach five out of five stars in the European road safety cooperation Euro NCAP’s crash tests, according to the insurance company Folksam’s annual compilation.

— Our survey shows that there are still relatively many car models in the new car trade that do not reach up to five stars in the crash protection category. It is surprising, says Anders Ydenius, traffic safety researcher at Folksam.

Increased crash values

He says it can be easy for ordinary consumers to think that all new car models are about equally safe.

“But even if the safety requirements are increasing and cars are generally getting better, there is still an actual difference if you look at real accidents between car models with five stars and those with fewer,” says Ydenius.

The risk of dying or suffering a ten percent medical disability increases by 20 percent in a crash in a car with four stars compared to a car with five, according to Ydenius.

“Don’t panic sell the car”

He thinks it is important to choose a car model with five stars when buying a car. Ideally, the model should have been tested in recent years, as Euro NCAP gradually tightens the requirements for crash safety.

Among the cars singled out in the compilation are European, American and Asian manufacturers. Ydenius advises car consumers to take part in Euro NCAP’s tests on its website.

— It is important to make a good choice when buying a new car. I don’t think it’s necessary to panic sell your car if it only has four stars, but possibly consider trading if it has less than four stars.
