A bombing in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan has claimed at least 20 lives, according to hospital sources. A suicide bomber carried out the deed against a group of people waiting outside a bank in the city on Thursday morning local time. The people were waiting for salary payments.

The Taliban who rule Afghanistan claim that a group within the Islamic terrorist movement IS is behind the act.

The leader of the fundamentalist Taliban movement, Hibatullah Akhundzada, lives in Kandahar, and the Islamist movement was founded in the city.

The regional information chief of the Taliban regime said on Thursday afternoon that the situation in the area was under control.
