Some 50 people have died in Angola in recent months after being forced to drink a poisonous herbal drink believed to have magical powers – allegedly exposing witchcraft.
– They were forced to drink this mysterious drink which, according to traditional healers, shows whether a person practices witchcraft or not, Luzia Filemone, a local leader in the city of Camacupa, told national radio.
Angola has no laws prohibiting traditional witchcraft ceremonies and smaller communities are allowed to deal with accusations of witchcraft as they wish. Often this means that exorcists are hired to prepare herbal potions. Anyone who dies drinking the brew is considered a witch.
