Many Finnish athletes improved their World Championship shares at the last minute – especially the height race: “It was the best of the weekend”

There were several Finnish successes in the Oulu rankings, which Sport’s expert Janne Lahtinen will go through in this story. The World Cup team will receive a replenishment immediately on Monday.

During the Midsummer weekend, the Finnish athletes who competed in the Oulu rankings had the last chance to improve their setup for the Eugene World Championships. The results window closed on Sunday.

Good evidence was provided, among other things, by the record-making spear throwers Toni Keränen (82.89) and Sanne Erkkola (60.18).

The World Cup team will be supplemented today with athletes who have reached the result limit. They are a javelin thrower Oliver Helander and a 400-meter hurdles runner Viivi Lehikoinen.

The team already has racers Aleksi Ojala, Aku Partanen, Tiia Kuikka and Elisa Neuvonenhammer throwers Krista Tervo and Silja Kosonen3-jumper Senni Salminenpole vaulter Wilma Murtoobstacle course Topi Raitanen as well as a marathoner Alisa Vainio. Sara Kuivisto had been selected for the Games, but a runner who has experienced various adversities in recent months is only aiming for the European Championships.

On July 1, those athletes who have reached the venue through the rankings will be selected. Coaching Manager of the Finnish Sports Confederation Tuomo Salonen Before the rankings, he estimates that there will be 20-23 athletes in the final World Cup team. Sports Expert Janne Lahtinen is on the same lines after the weekend.

– I made the same enlightened assessment as Tuomo. At best, the number of teams can go a little over that. There were championships all over the world during the weekend, so that also makes an impact, Lahtinen reminds.

Of the athletes already within the rankings, at least a javelin thrower Lassi Etelätalo3-jumper Kristiina Mäkelänfast-paced Reetta Hurskeenhigh jumper Ella Junnilan and a hammer thrower Tuomas Seppänen The World Cup place is secure without a seal.

The women’s height race was toned down

In addition to Keränen and Erkkola, among the athletes fighting for the World Championships, the high jumpers were very successful. Blue in Lalla and Heta Tuuripole vaulter Elina Lampela800 meter runner Eveliina Määttänen and a 5,000-meter runner Camilla Richardsson.

Instead of a discus thrower Salla Sipponen and a long jumper Kristian Pulli did not succeed.

– Toni Keränen did her job well. He was barely off the rankings, but threw his first record. If you think about the rankings, Lampela, who came back after the injury, jumped for a good race (440). He certainly raised his settings, Lahtinen says.

– Richardsson took the opportunity by running at 3.30pm. What was interesting was the height at which Ella Junnila’s absence offered Sini Läll and Heta Tuuri good opportunities to fight for the place. Both stretched wonderfully. I thought it was the best race of the weekend.

The saddest Finnish gift at the weekend was the bigger or smaller injuries of a few Finnish athletes. Javelin thrower Oliver Helander missed the race for the second time in a row. This time the reason was the feelings in the approximator.

Stick jumper Mikko Paavola skipped the race due to ankle pain. Returned to the race Maria Huntington had to skip the sevens due to shoulder pain.

– Huntington’s performance was good. He was in record condition after two sports, Lahtinen says.
