At least 179 people have been injured and many are trapped in the overturned carriages, AP writes.
According to Hindustan Times, 50 people have died.
The derailed train is said to have crashed into a stationary freight train on an adjacent track, reports the Times of India newspaper.
“In this hour of grief, my thoughts go out to the bereaved families,” wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter.
