Ferit Bayat (52), who had previously visited hospitals in places such as Mardin, Diyarbakır, Batman, Gaziantep and Adana and wanted to receive treatment but was told that his legs would be amputated wherever he went, was saved by the drug treatment administered by Op. Dr. Volkan Burak Taban, one of the doctors of Şırnak State Hospital’s Cardiovascular Surgery Department. Having regained his health, Bayat can now walk comfortably.
THE IMPORTANCE OF QUITTING SMOKING WAS EMPHASISED
Dr. Taban said that the importance of quitting smoking can be understood by looking at this patient. Drawing attention to the fact that vascular occlusion is a serious problem both in the world and in our country today, Dr. Taban said, “When we look at the causes of vascular occlusion, it is stated that one of the risky factors is smoking. Smoking and tobacco use are unfortunately widespread in our country. We unfortunately know that we lose more than 100 thousand people every year to smoking and related diseases. Ferit Bey is one of the best examples of this. As a patient who tells us how beneficial quitting smoking is, and who also uses the medications and treatments prescribed by his doctor regularly in cases where trust is gained in the doctor-patient relationship, we are also happy to see how much benefit he has received.”
“HE COULDN’T EVEN WALK 10 METERS, NOW HE WALKS 10 KILOMETERS”
Dr. Taban, who stated that he had difficulty walking and had resting pain in his legs due to vascular occlusion after walking a maximum of 8 meters, and that the patient was able to walk up to 10 kilometers with the drug treatment applied after quitting smoking, said, “When Mr. Ferit first came, he was a patient who had serious resting pain in his legs, which we call sitting, and could not stand still even when sitting, and could walk about 5 meters, 8 meters. After walking 5-8 meters, pains that we call crisis due to vascular occlusion developed in his legs. In our examination, we saw that his veins were blocked from both sides below the knee due to smoking. When we evaluated the patients in the cardiovascular surgery clinic, we wondered whether we should give surgery, angiography or another treatment? When we evaluated, we saw that the patient was not suitable for both angiography and surgery. We decided on drug treatment.”
“THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP WAS THAT THE PATIENT QUIT SMOKING”
“The most important first step here was for the patient to quit smoking,” said Dr. Taban, “At the same time, we took the patient to the cardiovascular surgery service and started intravenous treatments here. Since intravenous treatments are specific drugs that cannot be taken at home, we started the treatment here. After he quit smoking and the drugs we gave him, Mr. Ferit started to increase his walking distances day by day, due to the doctor-patient relationship and then his following our instructions to the letter. In our last check-ups, he was walking 8 to 10 kilometers a day, and the weather is hot. Even then, he can now walk 8 to 10 kilometers a day. The risk of having his legs amputated has been eliminated. The most important thing here is to first quit smoking, and secondly, to adapt to our treatments.”
MANY DOCTORS SAID THAT ‘HIS FEET WOULD BE CUT OFF’
Ferit Bayat, who stated that he saw many doctors and was told that his feet would be cut off, said, “I saw my teacher Volkan. He worked very hard. There were blockages in my feet. There were bursts in my fingers, wounds. I could not walk 2-3 meters. Thanks to Volkan, thanks to the treatment he gave me, I can walk, thank God. I can walk 8-10 kilometers.” (İHA)
