Many developers are laying off their workforce

2024 alone brought one bad news after another for employees in the gaming industry. Developer and publisher Capcom, on the other hand, has good news: wage increases of up to 28% are planned.

What happened recently in the gaming industry? 2023 was already marked by large waves of layoffs in the gaming industry. 2024 continued the trend. There is now even a separate English-language Wikipedia page just for the waves of layoffs this year.

Here is a selection of the larger waves of layoffs in January 2024

In February, more companies separated employees. Here too, just a selection:

  • Sony closed its London studio and, including the closure, laid off 900 people in February
  • Publisher EA closed its studio Ridgeline Games, canceled a single-player Star Wars game from Respawn Entertainment and put 670 employees on the road
  • After all the sad news of layoffs, studio closures and cuts, there is now good news.

One of Capcom’s most popular games is Monster Hunter World:

What is Capcom doing? In a press release, developer and publisher Capcom writes that they are planning wage increases for their employees. In the 2024 financial year, salaries are to be increased by an average of 5%. There will also be a bonus payment for all employees in April.

In the 2025 financial year, Capcom wants to increase the monthly starting salary for new university graduates from the current 235,000 yen (approx. €1,444.08) to 300,000 yen (approx. €1,843.50) per year. This means the employees have 65,000 yen (€399.43) more in their pockets per month – that’s around 27.66% more salary.

These changes come after Capcom made various internal adjustments last year. Among other things, heavy investments were made in human resources.

It’s nice to read about salary increases and not further mass layoffs. By the way, you can currently get one of the most popular Capcom games for €10 on Steam.
