In Indonesia, at least 18 people have died in an explosion in a Chinese-owned nickel factory.

The explosion occurred in a melting furnace in the nickel factory on the island of Sulawesi on Sunday and since then the death toll has risen. Among the dead are both Chinese and Indonesian workers. Around 40 are still being treated in hospital for serious to minor injuries, local authorities say.

The accident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents at nickel smelters in the country. Police have ordered the facility to halt operations until an investigation is complete. According to the police, the authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether the company acted negligently.
