At least 20 people have died in a bus accident in southern Pakistan, Pakistani police say.

It was a small bus that plunged into a water-filled depression late on Thursday, in the province of Sindh. The road it was driving on had been destroyed in floods this summer.

– The driver could not see the warning sign on the road so the vehicle plunged into a 25-foot (roughly 7.6 meter) deep ditch, says police officer Khadim Hussain.

Pakistan has the third highest road fatality rate in the world.

Earlier this year, the country was hit by record monsoon rains, which led to massive flooding, more than 1,700 deaths and added strain to an already fragile road network.
