Many dead from unknown disease in Congo-Kinshasa

The disease has reportedly been ravaging Kwango Province since October, a remote and hard-to-reach region. World Health Organization (WHO) have sent experts there to analyze the disease, which is now being investigated in the laboratory.

Symptoms include headache, cough, fever and difficulty breathing.

Children infected

At least 394 cases and 30 deaths have been confirmed so far, according to the country’s health ministry. However, local authorities stated earlier this week to the Reuters news agency that 143 people had died.

The country’s health minister Samuel-Roger Kamba speaks Deutsche Welle that the victims in 40 percent of the cases of infection are malnourished children under the age of five.
