At least twelve people are missing after widespread rainstorms have led to floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Large amounts of mud, rocks and trees that tumbled down a mountainside on Friday landed in a river that flooded. The raging masses and river water then swept through villages on the mountain, according to the local rescue service.

The village of Simangulampe near Lake Toba was the worst affected. Several people are said to have been buried under mud there. Rescue operations are hampered by roads being blocked by thick mud, rocks and rubble.

Extensive rains between October and March often lead to floods and landslides in Indonesia, which consists of 17,000 islands.
