At around 9:30 p.m., the emergency services were alerted that a truck had driven into a bridge pillar on the E4 in Hallunda, south of Stockholm.
– The cabin has collapsed, but there are two who crawled out and are now being supervised by the medical services, says Lars Stevelind, officer on duty at the rescue service.
According to him, the roads are very slippery and the emergency services have many accidents to deal with.
– Accidents are rampant. It is better to stay at home in this weather, with rain and this cold on top of that, says Stevelind.

It is unclear what possible injuries the child sustained and how the accident occurred. P4 Halland reports that the child was at risk of ending up in a water-filled culvert adjacent to the stream, but that the child could be picked up from the water before that happened.
The child is said to be between five and ten years old.
The accident happened shortly before 8:00 p.m.

The perpetrator is said to have fled after the shooting and the police are looking for him. The man is said to have opened fire in a bar in the town of Cetinje, about three miles northwest of the capital Podgorica.
According to the state broadcaster RTCH, seven people have been killed.

Former Estonian President Arnold Rüütel dead
Arnold Rüütel, Estonia’s last communist leader during the Soviet era and the country’s second president after independence, has died.
Rüütel was elected in 1983 as Chairman of the Supreme Council of the then Soviet Republic, a position he later used to prepare Estonia for independence from the Soviet Union.
After Estonia regained its independence, in 2001 he was elected President of Estonia after Lennart Meri. Rüüter held the presidency for five years and steered Estonia into NATO and the EU.
Arnold Rüütel was 96 years old.

The plastic profile and society lion Jocelyn Wildenstein is dead, writes RTL.
She became known as the “cat woman” after extensive plastic surgery that made her look like a cat.
Wildenstein is reported to have died on New Year’s Eve. The cause of death is unknown.

Power is back on in almost all of Puerto Rico
After a major power outage on New Year’s Eve, the majority of electricity subscribers in Puerto Rico have regained electricity, the energy company Luma Energy announces.
This means that almost 86 percent – 1.25 million electricity customers – of those affected regained power during the afternoon of New Year’s Day.
Two of the capital San Juan’s major airports, important water facilities and at least 31 hospitals belong to them, according to the company.
Puerto Rico often suffers minor power outages due to poor wiring after Hurricane Maria in 2017. But the massive New Year’s Eve blackout shut down virtually the entire island.

Several vehicles have collided on the Uddevalla Bridge, according to the police.
The collisions have occurred in both directions of travel.
– It will be very slippery on the bridge, says police spokesperson Jens Andersson.
According to the police, eight cars are involved. Four people are said to have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The bridge is still closed in the northbound direction, but in the southbound direction it should be open to traffic, writes Bohusläningen.

A record number of refugees drowned in the Mediterranean
As 2024 draws to a close, the Spanish human rights organization Caminando Fronteras has compiled figures on how many refugees have died or disappeared while trying to cross the Mediterranean to the country.
It is about at least 10,457 people and it is the highest figure since the voluntary organization Caminando Fronteras began counting in 2007, AFP reports.
The increase is 58 percent compared to last year.
– So many deaths in a single year is an unacceptable tragedy, says the organization’s founder Helena Maleno.
The statistics come from, among other things, public rescue statistics.
