In a very short time, One Piece becomes one of the biggest Netflix hits of the year. Shortly after its launch, the series was renewed for season 2. The live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s hit manga, which already spans over 1,000 chapters, impresses with crazy ideas and an epic adventure. However, there is one thing we won’t see in the next 10 seasons: pirate love.
One Piece creator bans pirate romances in Netflix series
The live-action adaptation was created in collaboration with One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda. He was strict about ensuring that his Vision authentically implemented becomes. So he laid out some rules that showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda had to follow:
“One of Eiichiro Oda’s editions was against romances in the crew. That’s a clear no as far as the manga and the live-action series are concerned.”says co-shorunner Maeda in an interview with TVLine.
This is a hard blow for so-called shippers. So fans who read the chemistry between characters as romantic or sexual and want possible relationship constellations. However, the Netflix series remains true to the spirit of the manga template.
Yves explains why the One Piece adaptation was so successful in the video:
BETTER THAN EXPECTED! ONE PIECE ON NETFLIX Review
Because at the center of the pirate story is the bond of friendship and the community of Straw Hat Pirates Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Gibson) and Sanji (Taz Skylar). So if you heard a crackle between the main characters over the course of the first season, that wasn’t what the makers wanted.
Of course, One Piece doesn’t completely forego love. Some members of the Flying Lamb crew become involved in Techtelmechtel over the course of the adventure. In season 1 of the live-action series, for example, the feelings between Usopp and his childhood friend Kaya (Celeste Loots) are briefly sealed with a kiss.
However, the Straw Hat Pirates will never fall in love with each other. Their relationships will remain strictly platonic in the future. For the lovestruck Sanji, who expresses his feelings for “Namilein” as he likes to express, it’s a particular pity.
Does the ban also apply to marines?
