Manchester United legend Denis Law dead

The former Ballon d’Or winner was diagnosed in 2021 with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and has been battling the disease ever since. During Friday evening it was announced that Law has passed away, aged 84.

“It is with heavy hearts that we tell you that our father, Denis Law, has sadly passed away. He has had a tough battle, but is finally at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his well-being and care, both in the past but also more recently,” his family writes on Manchester United’s website and continues:

“We know how much people supported and loved him, and that love has always been appreciated and made a difference. Thank you.”

Law was one of United’s most successful players, scoring 237 goals in 404 games for the club during his career. Only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton have more goals.

In addition, he was awarded the Ballon d’Or, which is awarded to the world’s best footballer in a calendar year, in 1964 and is to this day the only Scotsman to win the award.
