MAN will be the first European to launch a hydrogen vehicle series

Making a statement today MANwill be the first European manufacturer to launch a vehicle series with a hydrogen combustion engine.

The detailed statement from the company on this subject was as follows: Commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus continues to expand its MAN zero emissions portfolio. MAN, which is preparing to be the first European truck manufacturer to launch a vehicle series with a hydrogen combustion engine, aims to deliver an initial group of approximately 200 vehicles to its customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, as well as countries outside Europe. MAN plans to deliver its new vehicle, which it calls “MAN hTGX”, to customers for the first time in 2024, and plans to gradually increase this number starting from 2025. The new hTGX, which has environmentally friendly qualities; It offers an alternative zero-emission drive option, especially in heavy works such as construction, tank or timber transportation. hTGX also stands out as an environmentally friendly alternative to battery-electric trucks for use in regions without adequate charging infrastructure or in markets with sufficient hydrogen. Continuing its efforts to achieve zero emissions, MAN has also been the leader of the electric city buses market in Europe since 2023.

Continuing its efforts to achieve zero emissions, MAN has also been the leader of the electric city buses market in Europe since 2023.

The hydrogen drive used by MAN in its new vehicle stands out as a model suitable for special transport tasks that require a special axle configuration or where there is no space for a battery in the chassis due to the need for a truck body. The hTGX offers high payload capacity and a maximum range of up to 600 kilometers in the 6×2 and 6×4 axle variants initially offered. The H45 hydrogen combustion engine used has 383 kW / 520 horsepower and 2500 Nm of torque at 900-1300 rpm.

Providing fast power transfer by direct injection of hydrogen into the engine, the vehicle can refuel in less than 15 minutes with compressed hydrogen up to 700 bar (CG H2) and a tank capacity of 56 kg. hTGX also meets the “zero-emission vehicle” criteria within the scope of the newly planned EU CO2 legislation, with CO2 emissions of less than 1 g CO2/tkm.

Board Member responsible for Research and Development Dr. Frederik Zohm says the following about the new vehicle and the work in this field: “New CO2 regulations at EU level will classify trucks with hydrogen combustion engines as zero-emission vehicles. This means that such vehicles will fully contribute to our CO2 fleet targets. These vehicles also open the doors to a series that complements battery-electric vehicles. Thanks to the features of the vehicle, our customers will benefit from toll discounts, for example.

As a company, we have the most innovative engine technology at MAN’s Nuremberg plant and decades of experience in the use of hydrogen as a fuel. We use this and offer a real MAN experience with hTGX. The new hydrogen fuel truck is based on the tried and tested TG vehicle series.

The vehicle also impresses our customers with its highest level of quality and uncomplicated maintenance. As MAN, we will continue to research battery technology and hydrogen-based fuel cell technology. H2 fuel technology is also in the preparation phase at MAN. However, it will take several more years for this technology to be truly market ready and competitive.”
