Man taken into custody following high risk incident in Sarnia police

A man walked out of the front door of a duplex on Exmouth Street Monday afternoon and was placed in handcuffs by members of the Sarnia Police emergency response team.

It happened shortly before 3 pm after city police had closed a section of the street, between Trillium Park and the Highway 402 off ramp, earlier in the afternoon.

Police said in a statement officers were responding to a “high-risk incident” and the public was asked to avoid the area.

In an update, police said a male suspect had been taken into custody in connection with an incident earlier in the day on Exmouth Street.

Several police vehicles were parked on Exmouth Street and yellow bail tape was up in a neighboring townhouse parking lot.

At about 2:45 pm, police using a loud speaker told occupants of 884 Exmouth St., to come out with their hands up. A man wearing jeans and T-shirt left through the front door a short time later and, following police instructions, walked with his hands up toward a group of officers.

He was handcuffed and placed in a police vehicle.

Police called out a few times for any other occupants to come out of the home before several officers went inside.

They came out a short time later and an officer could be seen removing bail tape from the parking lot. The vehicle in which the man had been placed drove off as members of the emergency response team packed up their equipment.

The police update said the street had reopened to traffic but officers would still be in the area for an investigation.
