A man in his 40s was shot dead by police after a hostage drama in Norwegian Stavanger on Sunday evening, the Norwegian police said.

The man had escaped from a traffic accident, after colliding with a car in Randaberg. A family with two adults and two children was traveling in the other car, who managed to escape without injury.

Just before 11 p.m., the police received information that the man was armed and that he got into a car and took the driver hostage.

The police quickly tracked down the car and a car chase began in the direction of Stavanger. The man shot at the police before he himself was shot, the police said.
