The trial was held in the Italian port city of Imperia. The 74-year-old moved back to his home country after being suspected of the murder of his ex-girlfriend in Linköping.
While waiting for the court proceedings, he has been in custody for a year.
Aftonbladet is on site and reports on the case, which is unique. It is the first time that an Italian citizen has been prosecuted for a murder committed abroad.
It was Sargonia Dankha’s relatives who contacted the Italian prosecutor in 2021. The man is convicted, even though Sargonia Dankha’s body has never been found. However, her blood has been found in the man’s apartment and in a car he borrowed.
The man had also threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend, who left him and got another boyfriend. According to Corren the man is said to have admitted to a former acquaintance that he had murdered someone and asked for help to transport the body.
The case has attracted a lot of attention in Italy, where it will be the first sentence of life imprisonment in a court case since 2008, writes Aftonbladet.
Sargonia Dankha was 21 when she was murdered in Linköping in 1995.
