The incident took place in February 2021 when the man allegedly hit a dog several times with an ax and threw the dog down a flight of stairs. This resulted in fractures and bleeding on the animal’s head and body as well as cuts, according to the Falu district court. The dog eventually died from the violence.
During the evening, the man is said to have spent time with two women. One of the women owned the dog.
Wanted to be acquitted
The man appealed the district court’s verdict as he wanted to be acquitted of the charge of animal cruelty and that the damage should be classified as a misdemeanor instead of a serious one.
But the Svea Court of Appeal considers that the act justifies a prison sentence of one year, combined with both criminal classifications of aggravated damage and animal cruelty.
