Trump nominates crypto friend to key post

President-elect Donald Trump nominates financier Paul Atkins as the new head of the US Financial Supervisory Service (SEC). It’s flirting with the crypto industry.

Trump has promised to fire current SEC chief Gary Gensler on his first day in the White House. He is frowned upon by companies linked to cryptocurrencies as the industry has been heavily scrutinized during his time in office.

When Atkins previously, between 2002 and 2008, worked at the SEC, he often took a stance that favored the crypto industry, writes CNBC.

Trump is now nominating Atkins via his social media platform Truth social. In the text, Trump praises Atkins as a “proven leader of regulations characterized by common sense”.

Furthermore, writes the president-to-be, Atkins understands that “digital assets and other innovations are critical to making America greater than ever before.”

Before the election, the crypto industry poured in 245 million dollars (almost 2.7 billion kroner) in support of various candidates. The industry thus accounted for almost half of all the dollars that various companies bet on the election.

It paid off. The majority of seats in the new Congress will be held by members sympathetic to cryptocurrencies.
