Man in his 20s dead after shooting in Västerås

On Sunday evening, a shooting occurred in the district of Bjurhovda in Västerås when a man in his early teens was seriously injured. Later in the evening, the police announced that the man had died from his injuries.
– Shortly after eight o’clock, the medical service announced that the man had died, says Pelle Vamstad, press spokesperson at police region Mitt.

It was at half past seven on Sunday evening that the police were alerted to the incident. At the scene where the alarm was called, a man in his early teens was found with a gunshot wound who was taken to hospital by ambulance. However, his life could not be saved.

The police have now set up cordons at the crime scene where a technical investigation is being carried out to secure traces and findings.

Several witnesses in connection with the scene

According to the police, there are several witnesses in connection with the area.

– Considering the time of year, that it is warm and bright outside and that it happened early in the evening, there were many people who were awake and outdoors. So there are witnesses in connection with the area, says Pelle Vamstad.

Several media outlets have reported on people who said they heard about four to ten shots fired in connection with the incident. The police cannot currently comment on how many shots were actually fired.

No arrests

Right now the police are knocking on doors in the area. They are also looking for the suspected perpetrator, or perpetrators.

– No one has been arrested at the moment. Right now it’s about getting as clear a picture of the situation as possible from when the shooting took place, says Pelle Vamstad.

The incident is being investigated as murder and aggravated weapons offences.

The man’s next of kin have been notified.
