A man is facing charges after being found passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle at a traffic light in downtown Chatham early Tuesday morning.

Chatham-Kent police were alerted at 4:16 am about a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Wellington and Fifth streets for approximately 30 minutes.

Police arrived to find a man asleep at the wheel with his foot on the brake and the vehicle in drive.

A 53-year-old Chatham Township man was arrested for impaired driving and taken to police headquarters for breath tests, police said. The vehicle was towed.

Police also learned the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a January assault investigation.

While being searched during the arrest, the man was found with suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine, police said.

He also was charged with assault and two counts of possession of a controlled substance and released with a Sept. 18 court date.

Argument turns violent

A teen has been charged after an argument turned violent.

Chatham-Kent police were called to an Angler Line address in Dover Township just before 9 pm Monday where a youth allegedly had been threatening to cause harm during an argument before assaulting others.

A16-year-old Chatham youth is charged with two counts of assault and four counts of uttering threats. The teen was released with conditions and a Sept. 18 short date.

Assault charging

Coming home in a bad mood led to charges against a man.

Chatham-Kent police responded to a domestic disturbance on Thames Street in Chatham just after 10 p.m. Monday.

Police learned a man was angry when he arrived home and allegedly began throwing things and slamming doors when asked why he felt that way.

The man allegedly struck the person in the face, police said.

A 31-year-old Chatham man was found on Simcoe Lane and arrested. He was charged with assault and released with conditions and a Sept. 18 court date.
