A dead man in his 60s was found in the canal in Hofors on Saturday morning. The incident was first investigated as a drowning accident, but now the police suspect that it is instead a traffic accident, Gefle Dagblad reports.

– As we fear, the person came on an electric scooter and somehow ended up in the river. We are investigating it as an accident, a traffic accident with an electric scooter, says police spokesperson Mikael Hedström to the newspaper.

It was passers-by who found the man and alerted the police and emergency services. The man was dead when the police arrived at the scene.

In the last five years, at least four fatal accidents involving at least one electric scooter have occurred in Sweden. Three according to the Swedish Transport Agency’s latest statistics from November 2021 plus another person who died after falling over with an electric scooter in Nässjö in the spring of 2022.
