A 39-year-old man is in custody, suspected of having punched Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen.
The man says he is ashamed of the incident.
The man was drunk and under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident. He says during the detention hearing that he is ashamed of the incident.
– I cannot agree that I have any disagreement with the Prime Minister’s views. I think she is a really good prime minister, he explained via a Polish interpreter in the witness stand during the detention hearing according to Danish Television 2.
The man is detained until June 20, partly because the police will have more time to investigate the case, but also because there is a risk of flight as the man is not Danish but a Polish citizen.
The Copenhagen police sign X that they currently do not believe that the incident was politically motivated.
Got whiplash injury
The attack took place on Friday evening in central Copenhagen. The man is said to have hit the prime minister on the upper arm with a clenched fist, which is said to have caused her to lose her balance. During Saturday morning, Fredriksen’s staff stated that she sustained a mild whiplash injury and that she is therefore canceling her participation in today’s election event.
