The Western epic Red Dead Redemption 2 is considered a flawless milestone in gaming. But it’s not quite that perfect. That’s what actor Roger Clarke reveals. He’s annoyed because he had to do something wrong that, as a native Irishman, he actually can’t do wrong: mispronouncing an Irish first name.
What annoys the actorr?
Rockstar made me pronounce it wrong
This is what the actor says: In an interview with Gamology, Clark says that Rockstar wanted him to mispronounce the name “Colm O’Driscoll”:
The only regret I have is that I mispronounced Colm O’Driscoll. Rockstar made me mispronounce it. I told them it was wrong but they didn’t care. It’s pronounced ‘Colom’, not Colm.
“In Ireland we say it differently”
Why does he have to do that? Apparently Rockstar wanted to portray Arthur Morgan as simply not caring how the name of the “human rat”, Colm O’Driscoll, is pronounced. Apparently even Colm O’Driscoll himself doesn’t care, preferring the “mispronunciation” of his name.
In the game itself, minor characters address exactly this mispronunciation: The character Sean scolds Kieran for also mispronouncing Colm: “We in Ireland say Colom,” it says.
In response to the reply that O’Driscoll himself prefers “Colm”, the answer is: “And you prefer to keep breathing, don’t you? So please say Colom properly now.”
But when Arthur Morgan shows up, no one wants to confront him about his incorrect pronunciation.
So it is obviously a narrative trick to deliberately mispronounce the name to highlight a cultural divide between the USA and Ireland, the new world and the old world. Another big mystery in Red Dead Redemption 2 is the question of which ending is “canon”: The actor who plays Arthur Morgan says that 2 endings of Red Dead Redemption 2 make no sense, reveals his official ending
