The Swedish woman was found brutally murdered in her home in the United States.

Now – more than 50 years later – the police have arrested a suspect.

The DNA search yielded a hit on Michael Eugene Mullen, 75.

The woman was 31 years old and lived in San Rafael in California with her husband, also Swedish, and the couple’s two-year-old daughter. They were preparing to move back to Sweden when the killer struck on a November day in 1973, writes the local television station NECN.

The woman had been sexually assaulted and was shot three times. It was the husband who found her when he got home from work. The girl was found unharmed in another room.

The police questioned several witnesses, including movers and a broker who had been in the house that day. But the murder remained unsolved and the investigation went cold.

What would become the breakthrough began in 2021 when local police sent DNA traces to a state agency that searches a database for living relatives of potential suspects.

They had a hit already after a few months and the local police’s continued investigative work led to Michael Eugene Mullen, 75.

He was arrested near Salmon, Idaho, on Wednesday and is now in custody awaiting extradition to California. the police state in a press release.
