Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day safely, police advise

Chatham-Kent police encourage people to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day safely and will be conducting RIDE programs across the municipality over the weekend to help keep people safe.

Officers conducted a RIDE program in Chatham Friday with 253 vehicles being checked, resulting in three breath tests and one person having their driver’s license suspended for three days, police said.

If you are celebrating and having drinks, police ask people to take this advice:

  • Identify a designated driver for your group.
  • Do not let friends drive after drinking. Take their keys.
  • If you have been drinking, get a ride home from a friend who has not been drinking or call a taxi or local ride sharing services.
  • If you host a party with alcohol, offer alcohol-free beverages and remind guests to designate a sober driver.
  • If you suspect a drunk driver on the road, call the police and provide the location, direction the vehicle is headed, the vehicle’s make, model, color and license plate number.
