Police watchdog probes motorcycle crash

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a fleeing motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash.

An officer spotted a motorcycle driving erratically on Talbot Street in Aylmer about 7:30 pm Monday, town police said Tuesday.

The officer tried to stop the motorcycle, but the rider sped north then crashed on Elm Street, a dead-end road, police said.

The driver was arrested nearby and taken to hospital in St. Thomas, where he was diagnosed with a serious injury, police said.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and invoked its mandate. It probes all cases of serious injury, death, gunfire and allegations of sexual assault involving police across the province.

An Aylmer man, 48, is charged with dangerous driving, failing to comply with a demand and failing to stop for police.
