Malmö wants to host Eurovision for a third time

Loreen won Eurovision during Saturday’s final in Liverpool. In doing so, she became the first female artist to win the competition twice.

Now the work begins to prepare next year’s final, which will be held on Swedish soil – that thing is certain. However, the city and arena have not been decided. Malmö has on two previous occasions – in 1992 and 2013 – acted as host. And it is possible that the city will get its third chance.

The fact that the Avicii arena will be closed for the whole of next year for renovation, spoils Malmö’s chances.

– There may be days off in May 2024, says Karin Mårtensson, CEO at Malmö arena.

Malmö’s pitch

The last time Malmö organized the big schlagerfest was in 2013. The chairman of the municipal board in Malmö City, Katrin Stjenfeldt Jammeh (S), calls this year’s hosting a success and thinks Malmö is a good choice.

– We are an event city that has shown in the past that we can host large global events that create opportunities for folk festivals, she says.

One of the biggest advantages of Malmö as host is that, according to Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, they have previously been able to prove that they can both have a good party and keep costs down.

– We can probably make an arrangement at lower costs than you can in many other places, she says.

Expensive to arrange

Sweden will be the host country for the seventh time. The last time Sweden organized Eurovision in 2016, it cost SVT 125 million kroner.

– It is clear that it will be challenging. The economy is in a special situation, but we have some experience of doing Eurovision and we bring all those experiences with us. We have previously done Eurovision in an economically sustainable way and we will do that this time as well, says Hanna Stjärne.
