The new bill wants to make it easier to change legal gender. The age limit must be lowered from 18 to 16 years, with the guardian’s approval.
– I am a little hesitant to lower the age limit. In Sweden, we are considered adults when we are 18 and I don’t think it is entirely successful that you have to make this big decision when you are 16, says Ville Lagerberg in Östersund.
TV4 Nyheterna has commissioned Veria to conduct an opinion poll among Swedes and it shows that a majority, 59 percent, consider the proposal to be very or rather bad. Just over a fifth, 22 percent, consider the proposal to be good, while just under a fifth are doubtful.
– I think that as long as it doesn’t affect anyone else, and it doesn’t in this case, then you should be able to choose for yourself if you want to change your legal gender, says André Longueville.
Then the law can come into force
There is a big difference between the political blocs in the view of the proposal. 77 percent of the Tidö parties’ voters think the proposal is bad, while 40 percent of the opposition parties’ voters think the same.
The Left Party is the only party where there is a clear majority of voters who think the proposal is good. The proportion stating that the proposal is good amounts to 61 percent.
The law is proposed to enter into force on 1 July 2025.
