Major investment in Sami culture during the Ski World Cup: “Folkfest”

More than 100,000 tickets have already been sold for the event in Tråante/Trondheim. With so many visitors in town, the Sami Parliament on the Norwegian side now hopes that the visiting public will also be able to open their eyes to Sápmi.

Therefore, they are now investing half a million Norwegian kroner on two different projects during the WC.

– Tråante is in the heart of Åarjel-Saepmie. Through an investment like this during the championship, we want to contribute to a great visibility of Sami culture, says Sami Parliament Councilor Maja Kristine Jåma (NSR), in a press release.

Several years ago a similar investment

The money is divided between two different investments. The association Tråanten Saemien Dåehkie receives SEK 300,000 to hire a project coordinator for the World Cup. It will be tasked with planning and arranging Sami cultural initiatives during the World Cup.

The organization Ski-VM 2025 will also receive SEK 200,000, which will be used to book Sami artists and other cultural practitioners.

– Not since Tråante 2017 has there been such a big investment in Sami culture in town. The WC lasts for almost two weeks and becomes a public celebration. It will be a good and important visibility and not least recognition of our culture at one of the country’s biggest sporting events, says Maja Kristine Jåma.
