Major floods in southern Sweden after torrential rain

The emergency services in southern Skåne have received several alarms about cars stuck on flooded roads and water-filled basements during Thursday. One of those affected is Francisco Vilaplana, who lives in Kvissle outside Malmö.
– The garden is like a small lake, he says.

Persistent rain in southern Scania has led to flooding of waterways. On the E22 between Malmö and Lund, several cars got stuck in flooded viaducts.

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for high water flows in southern Skåne, and in Gavleån in Gävleborg county.

“A little scary”

Francisco Vilaplana’s garden was a little watery on Thursday morning, but a few hours later it looked like the house was surrounded by a lake.

– The water has become high in just four or five hours. We have just moved in but the neighbors say it hasn’t looked like this in 20 years.

Standing on the porch, it looks like he’s standing on a dock.

– It feels a little scary when you look at this. I hope it stays here and doesn’t keep raining. We can only wait and hope for the best.

He doesn’t have a basement that can flood, thankfully.

Yellow warning in Gävleborg county until Sunday

The yellow warning for high water flows remains until Friday in southern Skåne.

A splash of rain is expected in Malmö on Friday morning, and then a break until Sunday.

In Gävleborg county, which has been affected by recurring high water flows, the yellow warning remains until Sunday.
