Then just four months after hell, Wislander decided to stop feeling sorry for himself and instead run the Vasaloppet. Today he is completely free of the complications of the stroke and lives a completely new life.

Brand new job

However, the 58-year-old, who was named the world’s best handball player, has left the sport in his heart. Recently, Wislander got a new job in a completely new sport for him when he took over as the national team captain for the Swedish national team in goalball, a ball sport for the blind and those with severely impaired vision.

Along with the coaching job, he will also continue his position at Postnord as production manager. But now he opens up about his first time on the coaching job and why he chose the unexpected assignment.
– It was almost a coincidence. When I was asked the question, I first thought, damn, I don’t know anything about this. But once we talked further, I became more and more attracted and although it takes time, it doesn’t take all the time in the world. I think I have the opportunities to work with this and it is a new challenge that attracts. You’re a bit of a cocoon too, but a lot of it is about there being something new and exciting for me at my age and getting to meet new guys, doing team sports, building a group and trying to get it all together in a good way, says he in an interview with SportExpressen.

“Is just as crazy”

The handball icon has also undergone a major body change in the past year, where it all started with the television program “The Great Health Journey”. Where Wislander needed to get back in shape after his stroke.
– It was very important for me to get started with the training because I had an impaired left side. Therefore, it was a perfect fit to do this. It was a form that suited me to find my way back. My wife is as crazy as I am so we did it together, he says to the evening newspaper.

During the course of the program, “Slangen” lost over 8 kilos and radically reduced his body fat. Through hard work and a changed diet, his body eventually returned to his glory days as a world star in handball.
– Of course, it is fascinating that at the age of 58 you can build muscles and be better trained than when you were 23, but that was not what I was looking for. I wanted to get going and build up the strength in my left side, that was my goal with the whole thing. If you have a goal, it can be a sensible form, if you have a handle on the situation, he says in the interview.

Magnus Wislander has changed his everyday life and how he lives his life. He tries to think about what he puts into himself and continue to keep up with the training in order to feel as good as possible in his everyday life.
– I feel very well today. At my age I do what I want to do, I play football, train, do some folk racing and have this new mission now. I enjoy life, he tells SportExpressen.
