Outclassed by Norway, and now France awaits in the semi-finals.
Then the icon Magnus Wislander is clear about what Sweden needs to improve on.
– There have been a few too big problems there, he says in Radiosporten.
Sweden had already finished second in the group in the Main round, and therefore had nothing to play for in the last group stage match against Norway. Already on Friday, it is time for the semi-final against France, and the question was how much Sweden would want to risk wearing out its players in a match that had no real meaning.
Wislander’s criticism
But no one would have expected that Sweden would make such a flat match. Norway won by a whopping 10(!) goals, and afterwards the national team captain Glenn Solberg was self-critical, as he took full responsibility for the big loss. And it was perhaps not the recharge that Sweden needed before the must-match on Friday.
France is one of the world’s best national teams, and Magnus Wislander, legendary player and now an expert on Radiosport, believes that Sweden must improve its defensive game if it is to have any chance of reaching the final.
– What I think Sweden has great potential to improve is the defensive game. I don’t think it really worked. You haven’t really found this “good” height that you talk about, but have been left a bit man-to-man, he says in Radiosporten.
“A little too much trouble”
Above all, Magnus Wislander singles out Oscar Bergendahl and Max Darj as players who need to improve.
– The central defense as a whole has had games with a little too big problems. That’s where I think the great potential for improvement lies, says “Slangen”.
Magnus Wislander is clear with his judgment before Friday’s shocker; Sweden cannot concede 30 goals against France.
– You don’t win against France if Sweden concedes 30 goals, then it will be incredibly difficult to win. Somewhere I would like to say that around 25-27 goals conceded… Then you have a realistic chance of winning, he says.
