Magnus Ranstorp on terrorist suspects in Copenhagen

Two Swedes are suspected of terrorist crimes in Denmark after the explosion at the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen.
Now they risk long prison sentences, says terrorism expert Magnus Ranstorp.
– They are dangerous.

Two Swedes were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of the explosion at the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen. The suspects are 16 and 19 years old, and are now suspected of terrorist crimes, according to section 114.

For the prosecutor, it is now about being able to demonstrate that the motive is connected to the embassy, says Magnus Ranstorp, terrorism researcher.

– If the prosecutor succeeds in that, I think that in any case the older person can get at least 12 years in prison.

According to Ranstorp, they also risk being banned from entering Denmark for life.

Blown up in the embassy area

Two hand grenades were fired in the Hellerup district during the night of Wednesday.

– It’s in a neighborhood you don’t normally visit as a tourist in Copenhagen. It is an embassy quarter and that makes the probability even greater that it can be proven that it is in line with an attempt to attack the embassy, says Magnus Ranstorp.

How likely do you think it is that the prosecutor can prove that the Israeli embassy was the target?

– I don’t think the prosecutor would do this if he didn’t think there was a good chance of success. They make these assessments based on what they think they will succeed with, he says.

“Located dangerously”

The police suspect that the incident is connected to Tuesday’s shooting at the embassy in Stockholm. Something that, according to Magnus Ranstorp, makes it easier for the prosecutor to succeed with his prosecution against the two Swedes.

– So they are in a precarious position.
