The risk of a volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula has increased. Magma is flowing in a 15-kilometer-long fissure 800 meters underground just outside the coastal city, according to models from Iceland’s weather agency.
Exactly where an eruption may occur is still unclear, but based on where the magma penetrated, the probability of an eruption in the sea just outside the evacuated town of Grindavik has increased.
An eruption can occur without an earthquake as a warning, the authorities warn.
