Italian police have arrested a total of 43 people with connections to the Italian mafia, suspected of, among other things, corruption and having rigged public procurements.
According to the police, the people belong to the ‘Ndrangheta mafia, which mainly originates from Calabria in Italy, where the arrested people are also suspected of manipulating local elections.
“‘Ndrangheta has installed its members in crucial administrative and political positions to take control of and exploit the area,” writes Europol in a statement.
The persons could be arrested through a collaboration between Italian, German and Austrian police via Europol. The ‘Ndrangheta mafia controls a large part of the cocaine flow to Europe and is active in more than 40 countries.
