Riots after the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy continue in France. During Tuesday, the city prosecutor in Marseille announced that a 27-year-old man died as a result of being hit by some kind of projectile on the night of Sunday, reports La Marseillaise.
In total, over 3,300 people have been arrested, with the average age being 17, and many of them will have their case tried in newly established speedy trials which started this weekend. Already, 120 cases have been handled and some have received their verdicts. From lawyers, there has been criticism that the legal processes are unreasonably fast, according to Sveriges Radio, which refers to Franceinfo.
Macron singles out Snapchat and Tiktok
On Tuesday evening, Emmanuel Macron held a meeting with 220 mayors of French cities affected by the riots. There was a discussion of what has been done and what can be done to quell the protests. Among other things, the president spoke about social media:
– We must reflect on the use of social networks among young people […] When things get out of hand, you may have to put yourself in the position to regulate or throttle access to them, he said at the meeting, according to BFMTV.
Already on Friday, Macron asked the social media giants Snapchat and Tiktok to remove “the most sensitive content” after, among other things, video clips showing illegal acts were shared on the services.
