French President Emmanuel Macron met Chinese President Xi Jingping on Tuesday at the G20 meeting and asked China to put pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
President of France Emmanuel Macron says China has an important role to play in preventing the escalation of nuclear weapons use. With his statement, Macron refers to the Russian president Vladimir Putin to Tuesday’s announcement that Russia is lowering its threshold for resorting to nuclear weapons.
Macron commented on the issue during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Macron met the Chinese president Xi Jingping on Tuesday at the G20 meeting and asked China to pressure Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
Macron also demanded “reason” from Putin.
In addition, Macron said that North Korea’s deployment of troops to support Russia in the war in Ukraine has also increased China’s stake in the conflict. Macron asked Xi to defuse tensions that were further heightened by Putin’s announcement of an update to Russia’s nuclear weapons doctrine.
Putin announced the update to the nuclear doctrine after the US authorized Ukraine to use US long-range missiles to strike Russian soil. Ukraine did not delay and on Tuesday attacked military targets located in Russia using long-range ATACMS missiles.
