Doomsday scenarios of 11 billion people on our earth do not seem to come true. Scientists show that the world population is shrinking sooner and faster than expected. We now have 8 billion people, which will grow to just under 9 around the middle of this century and then it will only continue to decline. “The rapid growth of the world population has been decreasing for years. We are simply having too few children. It remains very persistent that people think that the population is growing too fast,” says Bregman, “but the number of new babies is actually too small. That we still have so many people. That’s because of people like you, Maarten. We – you – are getting too old!”
