Maarten 80 years old! Van Rossem talks about the housing shortage

To tackle the housing shortage, rapid and extensive construction had to be carried out from the end of the 1950s onwards. One of the major expansion neighborhoods in our region became the Utrecht district of Kanaleneiland. Specially built to accommodate young families. Anyone cycling through the neighborhood will immediately notice: almost all porch apartments are identical. Built of concrete, four floors, large windows and a small balcony. Without a lift, by the way, or to quote a grumbling Maarten, “had they forgotten that all those young parents would grow old one day?!”
