Apple’s M4 chip offers high performance and multi-monitor support. However, it is reported that some ultrawide monitors experience resolution problems.
Apple M4 chipoffers significant performance improvements to users on new Mac mini, MacBook Pro and iMac models. Providing support for three external monitors for the first time, the M4 chip can be used on 8K monitors as well as 6K and 5K resolution displays. However, users state on platforms such as Reddit and Apple Community Forum that they are experiencing resolution-related problems, especially on ultra-wide monitors in 21:9 format with 5K resolution.
M4 Mac and Ultra Wide Monitor Problems
The problems experienced on Macs with the M4 chip occur especially when using HiDPI mode at 5K resolution (5,120 x 2,160). Normally, HiDPI mode increases image clarity by scaling the 3,840 x 1,620 resolution to the monitor’s native resolution. However, users are reporting that they are having trouble activating this mode. Interestingly, the same monitors work seamlessly with older Intel or ARM-based Mac models.
Some users find the solution in third-party applications. Although software such as BetterDisplay increases the resolution options, this time the frame rate is limited to 60 Hz. Since there is no official statement from Apple yet, it remains unclear whether there will be a permanent solution to this problem.
The Apple M4 chip can offer a screen refresh rate of up to 60 Hz at 8K resolution or 240 Hz at 4K resolution. Additionally, it can support two 6K and one 5K monitors simultaneously. While this feature was previously only possible on models with Pro or Max chips, it is now also available on devices with the standard M4 chip. However, HiDPI mode problems experienced on ultrawide monitors cause this multi-monitor support to be limited for some users.
It is not yet known whether Apple will release a software update to fix this problem. For now, apps like BetterDisplay, SwitchRes Ultrawide monitor users may have to wait for a possible update from Apple.
