The M23 seems to be advancing without much difficulty in the northern part of Rutshuru territory. In the absence of the army in certain areas, the local self-defense forces are getting organized, but they are not up to the task.

This is the case this Wednesday morning in the locality of Nyamilima, an important agglomeration located about twenty kilometers from the city of Ishasha where there is an important customs post linking Uganda to the DRC.

The local self-defense groups which were still patrolling Nyamilima yesterday, a city of around 60,000 inhabitants, broke down late in the evening. Even the Moroccan blue helmets present in the entity only observed the arrival of the rebels who toured the city before settling there.

The objective, according to some M23 fighters who spoke with the inhabitants of Nyamilima, would be to reach Ishasha, thus consolidating their control over the major road linking the customs post to Goma.

This advance by the M23 has accelerated in recent days with the capture of several localities including Kisharo and Buramba.

On paper, this group nevertheless claims to subscribe to the disengagement process and announces that it will withdraw from the Rumangabo military camp, near Goma, as of this Thursday, January 5.
