Thousands of supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro gathered on Sunday, January 8, at Praca dos Três Poderes, where the Congress building, the presidential palace and Brazil’s Supreme Court are located.
Protesters broke through barricades, smashed windows and entered the buildings.
The rioters were fired upon with tear gas, rubber-coated bullets and stun grenades by police on the ground and from helicopters.
After a couple of hours, the police regained control of the buildings.
