Rubiales later released a statement announcing that he had submitted his resignation to the union’s interim president For Pedro Rocha.
According to the BBC, the 46-year-old Rubiales has also resigned from his position as UEFA vice president.
The last twist in the scandal was seen four days ago, when a player of the Spanish women’s world champion team Jennifer Hermoso announced that he filed a criminal complaint against Rubiales, who kissed Hermoso on the mouth after the World Cup final.
The lawsuit is related to a scandal that rocked the football world and Spanish society. Rubiales, who was handing out medals to the Spanish team that won the World Cup gold, unexpectedly kissed Hermoso on the lips during the award ceremony.
Rubiales had previously refused to resign. He has claimed all along that the kiss was consensual. Hermoso has denied this.
