Luis Rubiales resigns as president of the Spanish Football Federation. He states this in an interview with TV personality Piers Morgan.
– I cannot continue my work, he says in the part of the interview that Piers Morgan shared on social media.
Luis Rubiales has been heavily criticized after kissing Spanish soccer player Jennifer Hermoso after the World Cup final won by the Spanish national team.
“Must continue my life”
The public prosecutor’s office in Spain has opened a preliminary investigation into sexual abuse and Jennifer Hermoso has reported the chairman.
In the interview, he says that he talked to his father, his daughters and several close friends.
– They have said that I have to focus on my dignity and to continue my life, he says.
Luis Rubiales has also written on social media about the decision to resign from his post.
“After the suspension from Fifa, plus the investigation that has been opened against me, it is clear that I will not be able to return to my work,” he writes in a statement.
“Don’t want Spanish football to get hurt”
He also states that it would have negatively affected the association and Spanish football if he had remained in the post.
“I don’t want Spanish football to get hurt,” he writes.
In the statement, he does not mention the criticized kiss, but writes:
“I believe in the truth and will do everything in my power to win.”
