Spain’s confederation president Luis Rubiales is banned from “all football-related activities at national and international level” for three months. The FIFA disciplinary committee announced this on Saturday, writes the BBC.
The announcement comes after the scandalous scenes during the medal ceremony after the World Cup final last Sunday, when Luis Rubiales kissed the player Jennifer Hermoso.
In a statement on Friday, Jennifer Hermoso commented on the events, which led to strong reactions from around the world.
“I want to make it clear that at no point did I consent to the kiss he gave me and in no way did I try to lift up the president,” she said in a statement from the players’ union.
On Instagram, she writes that she felt “like a victim of abuse”.
Jennifer Hermoso and 80 other players have also announced that they will boycott the national team unless Luis Rubiales resigns.
Luis Rubiales has communicated that he does not intend to resign from his post despite the criticism. On Saturday, it was announced that the Spanish Football Federation, RFEF, may take legal action. They accuse Jennifer Hermoso of lying about what happened during the medal ceremony.
In the statement, the RFEF and Rubiales said they will “show each of the lies that have been spread, whether in the name of the player, if that is the case, or by the player himself,” according to AFP.
