Luffy didn’t speak to a member of the Straw Hat crew for over 6 years

In the manga, the main character in One Piece did not speak to one of his loyal companions from the Strahut pirate gang for more than 6 years.

As Screenrant reported, statistics for the One Piece manga showed that the main character and captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy, had not spoken to any of his crew members in a very long time… and I mean a really long time: more than 6 years.

A notice: Below there are small spoilers for the One Piece manga, volumes 73 and 97.

24 volumes of radio silence between Luffy and Franky

For 6 years, 200 chapters and 24 volumes, Luffy had not once exchanged a word with Franky, the cyborg and ship carpenter of the Strahut gang – even though they were traveling together.

The long silence between the two characters began in volume 73, in chapter 730. Here the entire Strahut crew discussed each other. While some of the crew traveled to Zou Island, the rest stayed in Dressrosa to fight Doflamingo.

Franky and Luffy didn’t talk again until Volume 97, Chapter 977, shortly before Onigashima happened. The volume came out a full 6.5 years later as volume 73.

That’s quite a long pause considering the two traveled on the same ship and had adventures together.

However, there was also a time jump of two years within the story, during which the characters were confronted with dangers in the New World.

With the ever-increasing crew, there was less and less time for Luffy to interact with all of his crew members and the events took up more and more space in the narrative. Advancing the plot became more important than the interaction between the characters.

How does the community react to this? On Reddit, user u/Japsanity posted the fact that the two characters hadn’t spoken to each other for more than 6 years.

Below you will find some amused comments about the fact that the last conversation between the two didn’t go too well either. However, several also criticized that the time jump in the story led to a lack of interaction between the crew members.

Here we have collected some user opinions for you:

  • u/NJJo: “Can you blame him? One of their last conversations was about a shipwright who was coating Franky’s brother.”
  • u/koopalings_jr: “The lack of interaction within the crew is the biggest loss of the time jump. Hopefully we’ll be able to catch up in the next chapter.”
  • u/funkyvenom6: “Hopefully the next arc can be more team focused like before the timeskip.”
