“Lucky we have these damn losers.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a Netflix adaptation. But the series is dismantled in advance – also by Asmongold. Because a character doesn’t behave like in the original.

After Netflix had quite a hit with the live adaptation of “One Piece” a few months ago, the Avatar series is next on the agenda. But a change to one of the most important characters doesn’t go down well with fans. The streamer Asmongold doesn’t hold back with his opinion either. He is angry and calls the story writers of the new series “fucking losers.”

What change is this? In the original Avatar series there is the character Sokka. The young man doesn’t think much of women and is shown to be quite sexist at the beginning of the series. Women are constantly treated with contempt and he doesn’t even take them seriously as fighters. He can’t believe that he was defeated by “girls” and condescendingly calls their training sessions “dance lessons”.

However, Sokka is not supposed to have exactly these character traits in the live-action adaptation of Avatar – an actress from the series revealed this in an interview.

This is what Asmongold says: As is often the case, Asmongold doesn’t hold back with his opinion. He finds the decision wrong and puts it this way:

The character was originally sexist, who ultimately reconsiders this view and ultimately recognizes women as fighters. […]

I just love seeing an artist’s work liked by tens of millions of people around the world and then changed for modern audiences. I thank God we have these damn losers changing a story for people who don’t even care.

This is how the community reacts: Asmongold then scrolls through some comments on X (formerly Twitter) that apparently share his opinion:

  • “Damn, now studios are even afraid of character development.” –
  • “Sokka was supposed to be a character with bad traits that grows over the course of the series. I would say they are insulting the audience by assuming that we don’t understand the concept of bad character traits, but THEY don’t seem to understand what that is themselves.” –
  • “The fact that these scenes were intended to show children that sexist behavior is wrong, but these ‘adults’ don’t understand that, says it all.”
  • For many who were looking forward to the Avatar series, the change to Sokka is quite a problem.

How do you feel about this change? Is it OK to significantly change characters for a live adaptation? Or should you stay as close to the original as possible?

Another Netflix series has fans fighting to get a third season.
